This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of the Seeking Safety model, a highly effective and evidence-based approach for the concurrent treatment of trauma and substance use. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the model’s core principles—safety, integrated treatment, and empowerment—and learn how to apply them in diverse clinical settings.
The workshop provides practical tools and strategies to foster stabilization and resilience in clients while addressing the complex interplay between trauma and addiction. Through interactive discussions, case examples, and experiential exercises, participants will develop skills to implement Seeking Safety interventions, promote emotional regulation, and support clients in building a foundation for long-term recovery. This training is ideal for front-line workers, including case managers, housing workers, clinicians, as well as leadership/management. This workshop also welcomes anyone seeking further professional development and interest in learning about trauma-informed care practices within substance use treatment contexts.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between trauma and substance use disorders, including how trauma responses can drive addictive behaviors.
- Learn the Core Principles of the Seeking Safety Model including its focus on present-focused coping, integrated treatment, and prioritization of safety in trauma and substance use care.
- Increase understanding of the role of boundaries and how they can enhance recovery by fostering a healthier connection with oneself and others
- Explore ways to identify and address emotions like shame, anger, and anxiety that perpetuate the cycle of trauma and substance use, fostering a deeper sense of emotional awareness in clients.
- Explore the role of countertransference and the use of self in therapeutic relationships to strengthen clinical effectiveness and maintain professional boundaries
