This 1-day workshop seeks to explore the concept of mental health/wellness
and illness using a person-centred intersectional lens. This approach seeks to
understand historical and current issues faced by equity seeking groups, to
gain insights on the etiology and experience through a social determinants
of health perspective.
This workshop will explore culturally safe approaches to engaging diverse
groups of people in conversation about mental wellness and addressing
mental health concerns. This workshop is best suited for community-based
helpers who work in the social services/healthcare sector.

Learning Objectives:

  •  1. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of intersectionality and its application in mental health, recognizing how various social identities intersect and influence experiences of mental health andaccess to care.
    2. Participants will explore how factors such as race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and ability intersect to shape individuals’ mental health experiences, including disparities in access to care and treatment outcomes.
    3. Participants will examine strategies for providing culturally responsive and inclusive mental health care, considering diverse perspectives and experiences to promote effective approaches and supports.
    4. Participants will identify common barriers faced by marginalized communities in accessing mental healthcare, including stigma, discrimination, lack of culturally competent services, and systemic inequalities, and explore strategies to address these barriers.
    5. Participants will learn practical techniques and approaches for incorporating intersectional perspectives into their mental health practice, including how to assessment, treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions, to better meet the diverse needs of service users.
