The primary objective of this workshop is to provide an overview of the basic pharmacology of the most common classes of psychotropic medications used in the treatment of mood disorders, anxiety and schizophrenia. This session will develop participants’: knowledge of names of medications: understanding of mechanism of action; skills on how to assess whether a behavioural symptom is due to the disease, side effects of the medications or drugs, or due to adverse drug interactions; and appreciation of common issues relating to storage, dosing, and risks associated with sudden withdrawal. This one day interactive workshop will use patient cases and group discussions to provide participants with practical knowledge and tools they need to assess, manage, and/or refer to other care providers, clients who are taking psychotropic medications.  Common situations and problems encountered in homeless shelters will be used as the basis for the instruction.
